The Heroic Journey
The idea of fantasy story's I think really comes from the want to escape are reality of the norm in are life's, and maybe wanting to be "the one" who saves everyone haha. I'm not really sure that feeling will ever truly be satisfied in people. There are so many fantasy story's but vary few of them seem to really capture the feeling of it being a hole world, with history and real substance i guess.
Tolkien, The Annotated Hobbit.
Tolkien has captured the feeling of a true world in his story, you can really tell how much time he put into the story that it took years to because something. It's not just another DND story about dwarfs and mages killing a ogre. There is a hole background to his book which gives it a much more "realistic" feeling. There is however a lack of females in the book (or any fantasy science fiction really) but that never bothered me much iv always chopped it up to something other than sexiest. Most fantasy story's are kinda based in a medieval times so its easy to go along with the lack of women for me anyhow (sounds pretty boring though). I really don't know anyone who doesn't like The Hobbit or if nothing at least the Lord of The Rings movies. Tolkie's The Hobbit is the ultimate fantasy story.
